Kobold Guide to Combat
I've been reading the Kobold Guide to Combat. I highly recommend picking up a copy and giving it a good read. It is choked full of essays on how to bring meaning and narrative back into the hack and slash nature of a typical combat sequence in a roll playing game.

Playing at the World -- My Winter Reading Material
Here is a book I have decided to tackle over the coming winter break. "Playing at the World: A History of Simulating Wars, People, and Fantastic Adventure from Chess to Role-Playing Games" by Jon Peterson. It is a mammoth book at over 700 pages. I have the Kindle version.

Keep on the Bordelands -- My Current Reading
Even though I am a busy graduate student, I do find time for leisure reading. Right now I am reading Keep on the Borderlands by Ru Emerson. It is part of the Greyhawk series of novels from Wizards of the Coast published in 2001.
It is a bit slow and quite predictable, but I find it a decent escape when I need to wind down or re-energize. Here is the review from goodreads http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/608150.Keep_on_the_Borderlands.
